The 5th running of The O'Darby Stakes, seen as a forerunner to the Irish Derby, was held on Wednesday 13th June 1821 at The Curragh over 1 mile 3 furlings and 58 yards. Nineteen Subscribers paid 25 sovereigns each, with colts allocated 8st 7lbs and fillies allocated 8st 2lbs. The winner was owned by Lord Cremorne.

On Wednesday 25th April 1821 Talbot was second to Ivanhoe in a 50 Guineas Sweepstake. On Monday 11th June 1821 Cade, then owned by Sir N Loftus, was second in the Kirwan Stakes behind Bob Roy. On Wednesday 13th June 1821 Cade was third behind Bob Roy and Noble in the Challenge of Kirwan Stakes. On Thursday 14th June 1821 Cade beat Ivanhoe and Troubadour in a 25 Guineas Sweepstake. On Saturday 16th June 1821 Talbot ran unplaced behind Spriggins in a Handicap Plate. On Tuesday 11th September 1821 Talbot won a 50 Guineas Handicap Plate beating Troubadour and Sprite. On Saturday 15th and Monday 17th September 1821 Talbot was unplaced in a Sweepstake behind Meteor and Aladdin respectively.
